Maryland Football: Quick Lane Bowl could be destination for Terps
The Maryland football team may not have had the year they wanted, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t successful.
With just one regular season game left, it appears that many of the bowl projections have the Terrapins headed to a common destination.
Maryland currently stands at 5-6 with their latest loss coming at the hands of Nebraska this past Saturday. The Terps have lost four consecutive games with their last win coming against Michigan State on Oct. 22.
The Terps face Rutgers this coming Saturday to close out the regular season. With the Scarlet Knights not winning a single game during Big Ten play, Maryland has an opportunity to become bowl eligible with that sixth victory.
With most expecting Maryland to win that game, this is a group that will most likely be going bowling.
Jerry Palm of CBSSports, like many others, are projecting Maryland to play in the Quick Lane Bowl. Palm is forecasting Maryland to face former ACC foe Boston College in the game.
Palm’s projection was released after this weekend’s games.
The game is played on Dec. 26 in Detroit at Ford Field and pits a Big Ten program against an ACC program.
The Quick Lane Bowl is one of the newer bowls in college football as it’s only in its third year. The inaugural matchup was a Rutgers 40-21 win over North Carolina and last year’s game saw Minnesota edge Central Michigan by a 21-14 result.
In addition to Palm’s projection, FoxSports’ Stewart Mandel had Maryland facing Duke in the Quick Lane Bowl. The Blue Devils aren’t going to be Maryland’s opponents because they only have four wins with only one game left.
The Eagles currently stand at 5-6 and are in seventh place in the ACC’s Atlantic division. Boston College is coming off a 30-0 win over Connecticut this past weekend.
Maryland’s former ACC foe will face Wake Forest on Saturday as they hope to become bowl eligible.
The Quick Lane Bowl may not exactly be glamorous if that ends up being the destination. However it’s never a bad thing for a program in rebuilding mode to play a postseason game.
Coach D.J. Durkin has already improved from last season and a victory against Rutgers on Saturday doubles the 2015 win total. In addition, Durkin and his coaching staff have recruited extremely well despite being in place only a full calendar year.
A bowl game definitely is a good selling point to recruits and even more importantly, the fan base.
