Maryland has a tough matchup with a Big Ten foe that is also struggling to get back into the win column.

Michigan State travels to College Park this Saturday for a game under the lights. The Spartans are currently on a four-game losing streak after winning their first two games this season.

To gain a better understanding of Michigan State, we caught up with Connor Muldowney of FanSided’s Spartan Avenue. Connor is the Lead Editor of Spartan Avenue and provides some of the best Michigan State coverage around.

1.) What has been the biggest area of concern this season?
CM: It has to be the offensive line. You could probably throw the defensive line into the mix as well as one of the main areas of concern, but the passing and running games have failed to get off the ground because of poor blocking. There is just not enough depth on the offensive line after losing so much in the NFL draft last year.

2.) Which quarterback gives the Spartans the best chance to win?
CM: Although Tyler O’Connor is a fifth-year senior and captain of the team, Brian Lewerke is the kid with the most talent. He showed it against Northwestern last week but was rattled by a safety in the second quarter and never recovered. Lewerke is just a redshirt freshman, but Mark Dantonio has compared him to Kirk Cousins. He gives Michigan State the best chance to win now and over the next three years.

3.) Why has the running game struggled so much?
CM: Again, the offensive line issues are the major reason for the run game’s struggles. It hasn’t opened up many holes, outside of the Furman and Notre Dame games, and it has resulted in mediocre play. Playing from behind over the past four games has also stymied the run game as well as predictable play-calling on first and second downs (runs between the tackles for 1-2 yards).
