Matt Campbell's relative youth? "Irrelevant" in his eyes

Published Dec. 7, 2015 9:57 p.m. ET

Matt Campbell is one of the youngest coaches in college football at age 36, especially now being in a Power 5 conference after taking the Iowa State job. The Big 12 is no stranger to young coaches - Kliff Kingsbury's Texas Tech Red Raiders outperformed expectations this season to make the Texas Bowl.

Still, some may covet experience when evaluating head coaching candidates. Campbell, however, is not remotely concerned about a number.

“We’re going to recruit to our plan and we’re going to take the best guys that can help us win football games,” Campbell said.

ISU quarterbacks are excited about working with Campbell, including Allen Lazard.

"He’s a player’s coach and just reaching out to a few of us players as soon as he got the job shows how much he really cares about you,” said Lazard, who led ISU with 56 catches for 808 yards and six touchdowns as a sophomore. “It made a good first impression.”
