McGovern accounts for 3 TDs in Stetson 48-7 win over Point
DELAND, Fla. (AP) — Colin McGovern ran for two touchdowns and threw for another and Stetson routed NAIA Point University (Ga.) 48-7 in Saturday's season opener for the Hatters.
Behind all five returning starters from last season's offensive line, McGovern capped the opening drive with a 5-yard TD run and the Hatters led 38-7 at halftime after holding the Skyhawks to 74 first-half yards, including 20 yards passing.
McGovern, 15 of 22 for 195 yards passing, hit Steven Burdette on a 15-yard TD pass and had another 5-yard scoring run in the third quarter. Burdette had six catches for 106 yards, including a 15-yard scoring pass from backup Gaven DeFilippo.
Matt Taft gained 109 yards on 19 carries and Jareem Wescott scored on an 18-yard run. Jonny Messina kicked three field goals.
Kylen Cross scored Point's only TD on a 6-yard run over right tackle in the second quarter.
