Mendenhall reflects on a decade's worth of work at BYU
It’s been a decade since BYU football coach Bronco Mendenhall took over the Cougars football program. How much longer will he stay in the saddle? That's a question not even Mendenhall can answer right now.
In 2013, Mendenhall, who has racked up a 90-39 record and two Mountain West Conference championships during his tenure at BYU, signed an extension to coach the Cougars through 2016.
After that, his Cougar fate is yet to be determined.
“As long as I feel like I’m supposed to be at BYU, and supposed to be doing this, then I’ll stay,” Mendenhall told the Deseret News. “But that’s a year-to-year decision and it has been the past couple of years.”
Mendenhall said he takes pride in what he has been able to accomplish at BYU.
“I’m not one of those coaches that can name the year and the season, and the game and who the starters were,” Mendenhall told the Deseret News. “But I can collectively say there’s a sense of peace and accomplishment from who we have attracted to BYU and have played here. I’m at peace with the intent of why we brought the players here and who they were and how they’ve developed here. I’m at peace with the consistency of success — and always driven for more. Ultimately, I would characterize the last 10 years as a remarkable stretch individually for growth and challenges that are 24-7.”
