Mendenhall takes a chance with Tanner Mangum

Published Apr. 27, 2015 4:40 p.m. ET

BYU quarterback Taysom Hill will unquestionably be the starter when football starts next season. But who will be the backup?

Hill has already suffered two injuries that ended his season prematurely in two of the last three seasons, which makes the backup quarterback especially important. Last season, Hill was backed up by an experienced JUCO transfer, Christian Stewart, and in 2013 he was backed up by, Riley Nelson -- the man he took the starting job from earlier in the season. Now, he will be backed up by the inexperienced Tanner Mangum.

While Mangum has talent -- he shared MVP honors with Jameis Winston, the potential No. 1 pick, in the Elite 11 camp in 2011 -- he is unproven at the college level.

BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall and his coaching staff are clearly taking a gamble on Hill's health.
