Miami RB Gus Edwards out for the season
Over the weekend Miami learned that it will be without running back Gus Edwards this season as a result of a foot injury sustained during a scrimmage on Aug. 22.
Edwards, a 6-2, 230-pound junior, was expected to compete for a starting job this season and rushed for 687 yards and 11 touchdowns last season.
“Gus worked extremely hard for the last nine month to prepare for this moment,” Miami head coach Al Golden said Sunday night in a statement released through the school. “He set a high standard and did a great job leading and being unselfish. We are tremendously disappointed for him, but we will be there with him on the road to recovery and anxiously await his return.”
The Hurricanes backfield already took a hit during the offseason as record-breaking back Duke Johnson moved on to the NFL. With the loss of Edwards, sophomore RB Joseph Yearby should see an increased role with the team.
Miami will kick off the 2015 season on Sept. 5 at home against Bethune-Cookman.
