Michigan Football: How Buckeyes Loss Could help the Wolverines

Of course, it’s always good to see Ohio State lose. But here is how the Buckeyes loss can really benefit Michigan football.

As every Michigan football fan can attest to, there is something great about watching the Ohio State Buckeyes lose.

There just is. And seriously, how satisfying was it to watch Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes blow that game to Penn State? One they easily should have won.

Yet, for a few fleeting moments, I kind of wished they hadn’t. For one, their loss immediately hurt the strength of schedule for Michigan football, as well as the chance for the Wolverines to end OSU’s perfect season on their own.

Beyond that, it made it much more difficult for an 11-1 team (with a loss to Ohio State) to have a chance at making the College Football Playoff.

Losing to an undefeated top-2 team is just different than someone ranked lower than you, which, as long as Michigan football keeps winning, will be the case in Columbus at season’s end.

So that dulled the moment slightly — for me at least. However, another idea soon popped into my head and it’s one that make the win look that much better to me.

I asked myself this question — what if, Ohio State loses again?

The answer — if they do — is that Michigan could win the Big Ten East without having to win in Columbus, an idea that seemed unthinkable at the start of the season.

Certainly, the Wolverines have plenty of work to do, especially with road tilts looming at Michigan State and Iowa.

Ohio State also doesn’t have the most difficult schedule. Northwestern (this Saturday) and Nebraska (Nov. 5), the Buckeyes’ toughest games before Michigan, both come at home.

OSU also plays Maryland and Michigan State on the road, but again, neither of those games seems too menacing.

Thus, at the end of the day, the loss may not matter. The Buckeyes still control their own playoff destiny and as long as both schools keep winning, the Big Game, will be as big as ever.

Yet, if the Buckeyes slip up again, it could make Michigan’s path to the Big Ten Championship much easier.

So if you needed another reason to root against the Buckeyes, not that you did, now you have one.
