Michigan Football vs UCF: Rashan Gary Set for a Big Role

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Many teams would be panicking if three key defensive lineman were having injury issues right now, but not Michigan football. That’s because of the Wolverines’ depth and of course, players like Rashan Gary.

In his first game in the Michigan football program, Rashan Gary notched three tackles and made a positive impact. This Saturday, when the Wolverines host Central Florida at the Big House, Gary’s impact could be even more profound.

Gary, the nation’s top recruit in 2016, is a 6-5, 287-pound beast. He saw plenty of meaningful snaps in the Wolverines’ 63-3 win over Hawaii. But, with Taco Charlton, Brian Mone and Maurice Hurst all possibly out for the UCF game, Gary may see the field even more.

Yet, as Gary said to the local media this week, if he is called on to play more, then he will be up for the challenge.

“I’m up, I’m ready for the challenge,” Gary said. “If he wants me to play more, then I’ll play more. But I’m just going to sit back and play my role. Whenever my name is called, I’m ready to go.”

UCF, led by head coach Scott Frost will run an up-tempo offense, similar to Oregon, where Frost coached previously. The Knights ran 90 plays last week in a 38-0 win over South Carolina State and certainly, they will want to run as many this week.

The Michigan offense will have something to say about that. The defense will too. But, that doesn’t change the fact that the defensive line may have to play a lot of snaps at the same time, depth is a bit of an issue.

Gary can be a big help in that area. He can play multiple positions and unless things change on the injury front before Saturday, you can expect to see him a lot on Saturday.

Hopefully, you will hear his name called quite a few times too.
