Michigan Football: Wisconsin Offers Opportunity for Elite Win

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

During his short tenure as head coach of Michigan football, Jim Harbaugh has won some big games. But a win Saturday against Wisconsin, would be his biggest.

At the start of the 2016 Michigan football season, the talk was of three games: Michigan State, Iowa, Ohio State. Those were the ones circled as the Wolverines biggest challenges.

Well, if people forgot, Wisconsin has a pretty good football team and this Saturday at the Big House, they will offer the Wolverines their biggest test yet. And maybe the biggest they will face until Ohio State.

Thus far, Harbaugh has found success against top-25 teams, with a 3-2 record. Michigan football notched wins over BYU, Northwestern and Flordia last season, all in dominating fashion.

But against top-10 teams, Harbaugh and the UM is 0-2. One loss was the disaster against Michigan State, while the other was a complete butt-kicking at the hands of Ohio State.

Since that day in November, Michigan hasn’t really been challenged. That way will change Saturday against a scrappy Badgers club that not only beat Michigan State last weekend, 30-6, it also beat LSU in the season-opener.

Make no mistake, Wisconsin is for real.

Offensively, the Badgers are what they usually are. They can run the ball and they don’t have a great quarterback. Yet, they score points and if you don’t stand up to them, they will beat you into submission.

For years, basically since Rich Rod, Michigan has been bullied in the Big Ten. Teams like Wisconsin, Michigan State and Ohio State, had their way with the Wolverines.

That changed when Harbaugh came on board. He brought an attitude and a toughness UM was desperately missing and that will be on display Saturday in the top-10 showdown.

But if Michigan football wants to prove its among college football’s elites, a win against Wisconsin is required. These games are the one’s the Wolverines didn’t play in for years, now they are and it’s time to start winning them.

In truth, Michigan is more talented than Wisconsin; they are better coached; have a better defense; a better quarterback; better skill players and more NFL prospects. The Wolverines should win and if they are to live up to expectations, they have to.

Being a big-tie program, means beating the Wisconsin’s of the world and this Saturday, the Wolverines get a chance to show they how big-time they are — well see Saturday, if they are up to the challenge.
