Michigan hopes to keep BYU QB in check
BYU's 2-0 start turned to 2-1 last week in large part because UCLA was able to make freshman quarterback Tanner Mangum an inefficient passer.
Michigan hopes to do the same thing, and keeping him in the pocket figures to be key to doing so.
"He's pretty athletic and has a good arm," secondary coach Mike Zordich told reporters Wednesday per the Detroit Free Press. "So in certain situations when we have time in practice, we work a scramble drill.
"We're trying to duplicate it."
ESPN.com noted Mangum was more effective in the first two games when he rolled to his right, completing 9 of 11 passes compared to 13 of 28 when he was not allowed to leave the pocket.
Against UCLA, he rolled to his right four times and completed more passes to Bruins (two) than Cougars (one). Overall he completed 30 of 47 passes for 244 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He was also sacked four times and ended up with minus-19 rushing yards.
On the season, Mangum is 54 for 86 for 664 yards with four touchdown passes and three interceptions.
