Michigan State Basketball: Tom Izzo wants to coach '8 or 10' more years

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo said at Midnight Madness that he wants to coach ‘another 8-10’ years.

Having Tom Izzo around the Michigan State basketball program for a few more years would work wonders for the Spartans. Everyone knows he’s not going to coach forever seeing as he’s 61 and will be turning 62 in January.

The Hall of Fame head coach’s best years are still in front of him, though. He has worked hard to become a more effective recruiter, and he’s putting together his best classes yet. In fact, his 2016 group is arguably his most impressive ever with Miles Bridges, Nick Ward, Cassius Winston and Josh Langford.

Moreover, his 2017 class has a chance to be just as good, if not better. Jaren Jackson Jr. and Xavier Tillman have kicked it off, but there is still plenty of room for a few more blue chip players.

While he’s not going to be around forever, Izzo did take the mic at Michigan State Madness Friday and address the crowd about his future. He took off his Hall of Fame jacket, put on a Michigan State track jacket and a whistle and stated he would be wearing that for the next ‘eight or 10’ more years.

If that doesn’t get Michigan State basketball fans fired up, I don’t know what will. If Izzo can keep recruiting the way he is and developing talent, he’s going to have a national title team in no time.

Heck, that was another statement Izzo made at the annual basketball kickoff event. He stated that he’s doing everything he can to raise more banners. The future is bright and Izzo might be around for another decade.
