Michigan State Football: Dantonio says Brian Lewerke 'the guy' in 2017
Michigan State football coach Brian Lewerke is ‘the guy’ in 2017 at quarterback, according to Mark Dantonio.
Fans won’t have to wait long before finding out who the next quarterback of Michigan State football will be. According to Mark Dantonio in his end of season press conference on Thursday, it’s Brian Lewerke’s job to lose.

This shouldn’t be very surprising, but it is refreshing that he’s putting his trust in a redshirt freshman who played very well, at times, and won over fans before his injury. Many were worried that Dantonio might stick with the upperclassman in Damion Terry.
Well, he cleared that up on Thursday.
Lewerke is a solid quarterback who played well in parts of the Northwestern game and against Michigan. He started against Maryland but didn’t have his best showing and then came in during the fourth quarter of the Michigan game and lit the Wolverines’ elite defense up for 100 yards and a touchdown, nearly engineering a comeback.
In my opinion, it will be between Messiah deWeaver and Lewerke in the spring and fall with Rocky Lombardi and Terry on the outside looking in. Lombardi will likely redshirt and Terry might be better off switching positions.
The redshirt freshman finished his first year with appearances in four games, starting just one, and passing for 381yards and two touchdowns with a 54 percent completion rate and running for 149 yards on 7.1 per carry.
Good news on the quarterback front as it couldn’t get any worse following a season with Tyler O’Connor leading the Spartans to 3-9.
