Michigan State Football: Malik McDowell frustrated by lack of flags

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Michigan State football’s star defensive tackle Malik McDowell is growing impatient with the lack of holding calls on him.

Through three weeks of play, Michigan State football has just five sacks. That number, 1.67 per game, is the second-worst mark in the Big Ten, and not something that Spartan football is used to seeing. With a guy like Malik McDowell in the trenches, you’d think that number would be tripled, or at least doubled, through three contests.

McDowell is growing frustrated with his team’s lack of pressure, but also with the lack of penalties in the trenches. He believes he gets held on almost every play, even with the double-teams.

According to Nic Antaya of The State News, McDowell has been increasingly upset with the lack of holding calls on him through three games.

“Last year I got a lot of double teams, so it made it kind of hard for me to get to the play,” McDowell said. “I got used to it and I don’t really get frustrated. I get more frustrated with the refs being real picky about me and not picking with the (opposing) offensive lineman.”

“Oh I know I’m getting held every play,” McDowell said. “I haven’t got one holding call this year and you can literally just throw the penalty for holding every play.”

A lot of this frustration has to do with not being able to be as dominant as he would like to because of the double-teams. He has fought his way to this point in the year with no solo sacks and he has the potential to be the best defensive lineman in the nation.

The pass rush needs to improve, but maybe McDowell has a point here.
