Michigan State Football: Spartans drop to No. 17 in AP Poll

Michigan State football has dropped to No. 17 in the latest edition of the AP Poll.

A tough loss for Michigan State football has led to the second-biggest drop in rankings of any team in Week 4. The Week 5 AP Poll has been released and the formerly eighth-ranked Spartans dropped to No. 17.

This should come as no surprise, though, as Michigan State struggled mightily with the 11th-ranked Badgers of Wisconsin. The Badgers came into Spartan Stadium and left with a 30-6 victory, holding Michigan State’s passing attack to minimal gains through three quarters and zero touchdowns.

With any tough loss and poor play by a quarterback, you know the fan base is going to be clamoring for the backup to start. Brian Lewerke may just be that guy and he got some action, completing 2-of-4 passes late as well as rushing for 16 yards with one carry.

Tyler O’Connor did not play very well, finishing 18-of-38 for 224 yards and three interceptions. Michigan State just couldn’t get anything going through the air and O’Connor’s double-coverage throws were disappointing, to say the least.

Michigan State will travel to Bloomington to take on the Indiana Hoosiers next weekend and it might just be a tougher contest than people realize. The Hoosiers have a great offense, and Michigan State’s secondary needs some work.

A loss next week would surely drop Michigan State out of the Top 25, but you can bet Mark Dantonio isn’t ready to let his team crumble after a heartbreaking defeat.
