Michigan State Recruiting: No need to panic over 2017 football cycle
Despite the slow cycle, there’s no need to panic about the 2017 Michigan State recruiting class.
Michigan State recruiting has taken a hit this year, there’s no doubt about it. After a good 9-10 win season, the Spartans probably would have had a better chance of landing guys like Ambry Thomas, KJ Hamler and a handful of others who the staff has ‘missed’ on.

Going 3-9 will never help the case for recruiting. Heck, it wouldn’t help any top-tier team in the country such as Clemson, Oklahoma, Ohio State and even Michigan. The only program that could probably still have a No. 1 recruiting class after a losing season right now would be Alabama, but that’s about it.
Michigan State currently has the 28th-ranked class according to the 247Sports composite rankings. While that’s going in the wrong direction as MSU was in the top 20 last year, it’s still a positive, given how the staff hasn’t lost any recruits to de-commitment and top players are still considering the Spartans.
So how does the staff go about fixing this cycle? Well, it’s all but over, outside of 4-7 more guys, but making sure it doesn’t happen again with the 2018 class will be up to on-field results. Win three games again, and you’ll see more of the same. Win eight or nine, and the difference will be obvious.
Is it time to panic about the 2017 cycle? Absolutely not. Michigan and Ohio State are taking advantage of a down-year for Michigan State, which is the exact same thing the Spartans would do if it was the other way around.
With Deron Irving-Bey set to announce his decision today, don’t be surprised when he picks Michigan. If the Spartans had a decent season, he’d likely be green.
Kids like to see results on the field. If Dantonio can keep his promise and turn things around next season, you’ll see an uptick in recruiting ranks.
