Michigan's Smith stars against BYU but leaves early with injury
Michigan enjoyed a huge first half Saturday against visiting No. 22 BYU, streaking out to a 31-0 lead in Ann Arbor.
That ended up being the final score, but the news was not all good for the Wolverines, whose previous most recent win against a ranked team came against Notre Dame in early 2013.
Running back De'Veon Smith had to leave the game early because of an apparent right ankle injury. He was spotted in a walking boot on the Michigan sideline, and that was termed a cautionary move.
The junior had 125 yards on 16 carries, including a highlight-reel 60-yard touchdown run in which he burst from the pile on what looked like it would be a short-yardage and sprinted the rest of the way to the goal line before shucking off a would-be tackler.
Smith was injured on a play in which his right leg was twisted underneath a tackler in the third quarter.
On the season, Smith is the Wolverines leading rusher with 331 yards.
