Mike Riley learns from sit downs with players
One of the things new Nebraska head coach Mike Riley had to manage when taking the job was a much larger roster than he was used to at Oregon State.
The Cornhuskers currently have 120 players on the roster and expect to enter the fall with 150 so getting to know his team was a big priority for Riley and company. To help the process, Riley held 15 minute sit downs with every player so he could get to know them as people to better coach them. Here is what he had to say about his motivations for doing it per the Lincoln Journal Star:
“Because I didn’t get to recruit them, and we’re new to them and they’re new to us, I wasn’t in their homes with their families, I don’t really know their backgrounds, Riley said. So I asked them to give me a brief history about who they are, and talk about their families.”
Riley also said that learning what brought players to Nebraska is important and he learned that he needs to get recruits on campus early, so that's why there has been so much focus on that in recruiting. That has to be music to Husker fans' ears.
