Muschamp finds faults in defense's first scrimmage
Gus Malzahn spoke very highly of the Tigers' defense following the team's first scrimmage of fall camp, however their defensive coordinator Will Muschamp wasn't very pleased. Despite the fact the defense kept the Auburn offense out of the end zone, Muschamp sees room for improvement, most notably with the team's run defense.
"We didn't play the run very well and that was extremely disappointing," Muschamp said Wednesday, according to AL.com. "We gave up five big runs and over four yards a carry for the entire scrimmage. I'm extremely concerned about that, especially in our league."
"We've got to do a better job of playing the run," Muschamp said. "It was more of a run fit issue than it was a tackling issue and a gap control issue, and they are very correctable. There are very correctable things involved with that and we will continue to improve."
Auburn gave up just over 168 yards on the ground, good for 69th in the nation in 2014.
With the season quickly approaching, Muschamp continues to search for defensive linemen that he is comfortable playing in league play.
"We need more guys coming up front," Muschamp said. "Maurice Swain had his best scrimmage since I've been here. We've got to have a bunch in this league. You all know, it's just hard. You've got to be able to have a bunch of big bodies upfront to be able to sustain the grind of the league."
