Muschamp unfazed by Auburn's slow start on defense
This wasn't the start many saw coming when Will Muschamp decided to return to the Plains and once again lead Auburn's defense. At the top of that list is Muschamp himself.
After the first three games of the season, Auburn ranks among the worst defenses in the SEC in three major defensive categories: 13th in scoring defense, 14th in rushing defense and 13th in total defense.
"I've never been in this situation," Muschamp said to AL.com. "But again, I'm very excited about the group we have and I'm in this for the long haul. This is a great place to be and I'm excited about the players we have on campus and the players we're recruiting, Gus (Malzahn) and the job he's doing here.
Considering Muschamp is pulling in over $150,000 a game to coach Auburn's defense, those results won't be well received if something doesn't change in a hurry.
After this weekend's game against Mississippi State, Auburn catches a break in the schedule as San Jose State visits Auburn before the Tigers' bye week. Expect Muschamp and the defense to do some major soul searching between now and the next three weeks if they have any chance of turning around their fortunes before returning for SEC play.
We've got to do a better job of coaching the guys and putting them in situations where they can be successful," Muschamp said. "That's your job as a coach. I haven't done that good enough and it will get better."
