MVP for Auburn Football in Big Win Over Arkansas State
Here is who we think was the MVP for Auburn football in their 51-14 win over Arkansas State on Saturday for their first win of the season.
Fortunately for Auburn football fans, this is a game where you have a lot of options to consider when trying to find an MVP from the game.
Most importantly, there are several guys on offense to choose from after scoring 51 points and putting up over 700 total yards.
The defensive stats were so spread out and a lot of people – other than T.J. Neal – were given a chance to play, that it’s hard to pick anyone from the defense.
I still think Tre’ Williams was the defensive MVP for Auburn in this game with 8 tackles, 1.5 tackles for a loss and a sack.
It’s going to be cliché, but I think you have to give Sean White the MVP trophy for this game.
I said several times last week that if Gus Malzahn gives Sean White the opportunity to throw the ball early, and if White can execute those passes, this will be an easy win for Auburn.
That’s exactly what White did early in this game, and after that it was a wrap.
On Auburn’s first drive White completed passes of 18 and 15 yards, and also had a run of 7 yards. Even though that drive ended in a Kerryon Johnson fumble, you could tell this was going to be a big day for the offense.
He went on to throw for 244 yards on 17 completions for 3 touchdowns. He only had one passing touchdown in his career at Auburn, so it’s hard not to give him the MVP after throwing for three touchdowns.
He could have had a couple more, but he missed a wide open receiver in the back of the end zone to end the first half. Then he had a touchdown pass called back in the second half because of a questionable illegal motion penalty.
What was most impressive from White in this game was his ability to run the football. He picked up 60 yards on the ground on 10 carries. Most of those were not designed runs. He read the coverage, and if nothing was open, he’d tuck it and run the ball.
He only took one sack in the game, which was huge because it kept Auburn out of third-and-long situations.
There were a couple of short passes he missed on, and he still doesn’t possess a great deep ball, but this was by far his best game at Auburn.
For that reason alone, he’s easily the MVP from Auburn’s big win on Saturday night.
Honorable Mention:
It’s hard not to name either Kamryn Pettway or Kerryon Johnson as the games MVP with both of them going over 100 yards rushing. But those lanes were opened up because of White’s ability to throw the football.
This was also a huge game for Darius Slayton catching 2 touchdown passes.
Again, I’m not going to complain about having a bunch of players to choose from. You couldn’t have gone wrong picking any of the as the MVP, but Sean White is our guy.
