Nebraska Football: Why Fandom 250 Got It Wrong

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The 1995 Nebraska football team is considered the best college football team of all-time by quite a few folks. Yes, even outside the state of Nebraska. It’s an excellent illustration of the program as a whole.

Showing up week in and week out, putting their all into their task no matter how hard and being able to shake hands with the opposition the game is settled.

It is because of this passion and fandom that other college football fans demand that their alumni flock to Lincoln, Neb.

Nebraska fans don’t treat fans of opposing schools nicely because it gives an inflated sense of self-importance. Big Red backers love the game of football, their school and if people come to share in that, they want the experience to be a happy memory for all involved.

It’s because of this that the Fandom 250 list is flawed.

For those of you unaware, a massive undertaking has recently been unveiled: The Fandom 250. A list of 250 fan bases ranked from middling to the greatest in scope.

Yes, there is adoration of colleges on that list. No doubt you’re curious where Dear Ol’ Nebraska U falls on it.

You’ll find Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan, Texas, Florida, LSU and Florida State. No Nebraska.

There’s USC, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Penn State, Auburn, Michigan State. No Nebraska.

    Really?

The school that started a tradition of showing up for each and every game since 1962 isn’t worth a place on this list?

Five national championships in football alone, countless conference titles, three Heisman winners, a laundry list of major award winners, two Hall of Fame coaches. No Nebraska.

Bested by Westworld, Chanel, horror fans and Aziz Ansari?

I think not. It’s a good thing that it’s December. There’s someone else making a list that will be far more accurate.
