Nebraska Football's Keith Williams Talks Return To The Sidelines

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Nebraska football team will have it’s full contingent on Saturday when the Huskers take on the Illinois Fighting Illini.

Wide receivers coach Keith Williams has been sitting out the first four games of the season after being suspended for a summer DUI arrest. The Illinois game is the first in which he will be able to coach from the sidelines again.

While he had not been banned from talking to the media, Williams had avoided speaking out since the season started. Now that he’s back to being a full time member of the Nebraska football coaching staff, it appears he’s comfortable talking to the press again.

He did just that on Wednesday and HuskersIllustrated reports he actually traveled to the Northwestern game. Because he could not attend the game, he ended up watching the contest against the Wildcats on his iPad in the airport.

Williams has been back to practices for the last few weeks and the coach said things got back to normal pretty quickly once he was able to spend time with the team. During his remarks on Wednesday the coach, who was a fan favorite before his arrest thanked those same fans for their support while he dealt with the fallout of his arrest.

Williams is still popular, but the Husker fanbase was torn about whether or not he should retain his job shortly after his arrest. For the most part, those who were weighing in seemed to be placated by his suspension.

While he’s been back for a while now, Williams has made it clear it was hard for him to miss the games. One additional remark he made during his quick meeting with the media was that he was quite annoyed with the way the Huskers wideouts played in the first game of the year, but he’s seen improvement as the season has gone on.
