Nebraska Vs Fresno State First Quarter Recap

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Nebraska Cornhuskers threw one pass in the first quarter … on purpose.

After spending the winter wondering if Mike Riley and company learned their lesson about running the game more, it appears they got an A in the course. Against a Fresno State defense that finished in the 100’s in total defense last year it had to be tempting to air it out.

Instead, the Huskers kept it on the ground, to the extreme. Nebraska ran the ball on its first 9 offensive plays. It ran the ball on 15 of its 16 offensive plays in the first quarter. It also ended the quarter ahead 7-0.

Terrell Newby and Devine Ozigbo imposed their will on the Fresno State defense, carrying a combined 9 times for 51 yards and a touchdown. That touchdown was something else to see. On 3rd and goal at the 1 yard line, Ozigbo took the handoff, met the entire Fresno State team at the line and pushed all of them into the end zone. ALL OF THEM.

There wasn’t much to say about the passing game, since the Huskers threw just one pass, but it was a nice, crisp, 11-yard pass to Stanley Morgan Jr. Defensively, the Huskers struggled a bit in Fresno’s first drive, but managed to bow up when it mattered after the Bulldogs moved into the red zone. A missed field goal meant no harm-no foul.

All in all, it appears the Huskers started off the season exactly as Nebraska football fans had hoped it would start off. Onto the second quarter.
