New Hampshire waits on injured QB Knight's status
(STATS) - The availability of New Hampshire quarterback Trevor Knight for Saturday's FCS playoff game at South Dakota State won't be known until later this week, coach Sean McDonnell said Monday.
Knight, a redshirt junior, is under concussion protocol after being knocked out of a 21-15 second-round win at Central Arkansas this past Saturday. Redshirt freshman Christian Lupoli played just over two quarters in relief of Knight and would start in the quarterfinal at fifth-seeded South Dakota State, if necessary.
"Trevor was feeling much better (on Sunday). He's in concussion protocol," McDonnell said Monday on a CAA Football conference call. "We won't know until Thursday or Friday if he's going to be able to go this week. So with that being said, Chris has to step up and hopefully he'll play his tail off for us. He really did a great job coming in. The one thing the kid has always had, and you got it from day one when he came in as a freshman, he's got composure. He went in and he just settled down."
Against Central Arkansas, Lupoli was 8 of 10 for 63 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Knight has passed for 3,197 yards and 25 touchdowns this season.
New Hampshire (9-4), a CAA Football member, is appearing in the playoffs for the 14th straight season, reaching the quarterfinals for the ninth time in McDonnell's 19 seasons. Missouri Valley Conference member South Dakota State (9-2) has reached the quarters for the second consecutive year.
