SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame defensive back Shaun Crawford will miss the season with a left knee injury suffered in practice this week.

Coach Brian Kelly said Thursday that Crawford tore an ACL during one-on-one drills Tuesday.

Crawford, a senior, was set to be the team's top nickel back. The 12th-ranked Fighting Irish open against No. 14 Michigan on Saturday night.

This is the third season-ending season for Crawford, who tore his right ACL and missed the entire 2015 and missed almost all of 2016 with an Achilles injury. Last season, Crawford had two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and 32 tackles.

Kelly said safety Nick Coleman and freshman Houston Griffith will likely fill Crawford's role.
