No 'GameDay' for Virginia Tech, but Beamer did get his own hot dog
ESPN’s College Gameday crew will not be heading to Blacksburg this Saturday for Frank Beamer’s final home game. However, Virginia Tech’s longtime coach did manage to get a hot dog named after him.
Despite a strong campaign by Hokies fans to lure GameDay to Blacksburg for Virginia Tech's (5-5, 3-3) battle with No. 17 North Carolina (9-1, 6-0), ESPN opted to go with No. 9 Michigan State (9-1) at No. 3 Ohio State (10-0).
However, there was a consolation prize for Beamer, Virginia Tech's 29-year head coach who recently announced his was retiring at the end of the season. A HWY 55 Burgers, Shakes and Fries restaurant that recently opened in Blacksburg has decided to honor the winningest active coach in the FBS by naming Saturday “Frank Beamer Day” and selling a “Beamer Frank.” The hot dog will be topped with pimento cheese, bacon and BBQ sauce. The toppings are meant to “reflect Virginia Tech’s colors.”

The restaurant will donate $1 from every Beamer Frank ($1.99) to Herma’s Readers, an organization Beamer founded in 2008 in honor of his mother to promote literacy in Virginia.
