Notre Dame, Michigan to renew rivalry? Kelly offers hope

Notre Dame and Michigan first played football against each other in 1888. The Fighting Irish and Wolverines last faced off on the gridiron last year.

When will be the next time is a mystery, but Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly at least made it sound like a next time is likely to actually happen.

Per MLive.com, Kelly told Rich Eisen on the latter's show both sides are "working hard to see if we can get that done."

While making sure to note he is not directly involved in the dealings of the athletics director, Kelly added that he has heard the phrase "trending up" is an appropriate description to talks about renewing the series.

Michigan, which holds a 24-17-1 advantage in the all-time series with Notre Dame, does not have any openings in its schedule until 2018, and the Big Ten's move to a nine-game conference schedule in the future could complicate things at least a bit, but most fans of college football will probably agree the game is better when the sport's historic rivals are playing each other.
