Ohio prep QB verbally commits to Spartans

Michigan's loss was eventually Michigan State's gain as Huber Heights (Ohio) Wayne quarterback Messiah deWeaver announced at his school Wednesday night his intention to play his college ball in East Lansing. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound junior originally was a Wolverines pledge but reopened his recruitment in January, something he told Scout.com was "a business decision."

Scout rates deWeaver, who played his first three seasons at Trotwood (Ohio) Madison High School, the top quarterback prospect in Ohio and the No. 2 signal-caller in the Midwest.

Despite offers from major programs such as Arkansas, Pittsburgh, Louisville and Penn State, deWeaver is only a three-star prospect, but Scout's Dave Berk writes that should not concern MSU fans.

Berk, a long-time recruiting analyst in southwest Ohio, suggested in an analysis of deWeaver's commitment he could follow a similar development path as Connor Cook, another Ohio native who was lightly regarded coming out of high school before developing into a starter who has led the Spartans to back-to-back New Year's Day bowl victories.

"Michigan State is the perfect environment for deWeaver to grow physically and mentally and should be a better college performer than high school performer," Berk wrote.

He continued: "Much like Connor Cook, deWeaver will be a work in progress early but should be positioned to battle for playing time following a redshirt season then followed by Damion Terry ending his Spartans career."
