Oklahoma Football: Texas Tech Game Produces Co-Big 12 Award Winners

It shouldn’t be a big surprise that the winner of the weekly Big 12 offensive award comes from the Oklahoma football game – if you want to call it that – with Texas Tech.

Baker Mayfield with a career high 545 passing yards and a school-record seven touchdown passes. Or perhaps his counterpart with the Red Raiders, Patrick Mahomes, who set a new NCAA record with 819 yards of total offense and seven touchdowns of his own.

OU’s Joe Mixon and Dede Westbrook also would be worthy candidates. Mixon ran for 263 yards and caught four passes for an additional 114 yards, totaling 377 all-purpose yards, the most by a player on an FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) team this season.

Westbrook had nine receptions for 202 yards, giving him 35 catches for 776 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns in the past four games, more than his receiving yardage in all of 2015.

A difficult selection, for sure, and we’re just talking about the performances in one Big 12 game over the weekend.

The Big 12 settled on co-winners of the Offensive Player of the Week award: OU’s Mixon and Texas Tech’s Mahomes.

Mixon produced five touchdowns in the game (three rushing and two receiving). His three rushing touchdowns set an Oklahoma record for a running back. Additionally, the redshirt sophomore is the only FBS player this year to score at least two rushing TDs and two receiving TDs in the same game and only the second since 1996 to have three touchdowns on the ground and two TD receptions in one game.

The Oklahoma running back is second in the nation this season in all purpose yards, averaging 207.0 per game. In addition to being a weapon as a runner and as a pass catcher, Mixon also returns kickoffs for the Sooners.

Mixon is the second Oklahoma player to be honored this season as Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week. Westbrook received the honor after his 232 yards receiving vs. Texas several weeks back.

Sooner kicker Austin Seibert was named Special Teams Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 2 (after OU’s 52-46 win over TCU).
