Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield announces he'll return for senior year
Oklahoma junior quarterback Baker Mayfield will be back for his senior year in 2017.
After leading the Sooners to a 38-20 victory over rival Oklahoma State for the Big 12 Championship on Saturday, Mayfield finally announced his plans for his future.
"I'm coming back," Mayfield said during the press conference. "I'll be here for another year for the opportunity of a three-peat and the ultimate goal of winning a national title."
Mayfield, who could declare for the NFL Draft on Monday, had been quiet about his intentions prior to Saturday's victory -- his second Big 12 title.
"I've dreamed of playing here for too long I fought for that extra year of eligibility for too long," Mayfield added. "I had everybody worked on that and it's not a feeling that I owe anybody or anything, but it's just that we all did that for a certain reason. I've always dreamed of playing here and another season under coach Stoops will be another dream come true and a great opportunity for us to win another national title."
Mayfield transferred to Oklahoma as a Texas Tech walk-on his true freshman year. He fought for an additional year of eligibility this year and won, thanks to a rule change that allows walk-ons to transfer without penalty.
