Ole Miss lands intriguing JC prospect

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 1:47 p.m. ET

On Wednesday, Ole Miss picked up its second commitment in the class of 2017 -- garnering a pledge from defensive end Markel Winters.

Winters currently attends Jones County Junior College in Ellisville, Miss. The Florida native was a one-time player at ECU -- before being dismissed over multiple issues -- including a suspension stemming from firing a BB gun towards the ground within city limits. Winters has since bounced back to the junior college ranks, and has performed quite well.

This past season, Winters accrued 33 tackles and 5.0 sacks. He's relentless off the edge as a pure pass-rushing dynamo. According to his personal Hudl account, Winter registers at 6-foot-4, 255 pounds. He also lists himself running a 4.75 in the 40-yard dash.

Via an interview with The Clarion-Ledger, Winters spoke glowingly about the entire program. He noted the "crazy" atmosphere within Oxford on gameday, and also spoke about the impressive facilities on campus.

Undoubtedly, this will be the highest level of competition in which Winters has participated in. He truly does appear ready for the challenge.

"I'm very excited. I always knew I had the ability to play in the SEC or the ACC, anywhere in the Power 5," said Winters. "When I was at ECU, I just knew I should be at a Power 5 school. That's where I feel like I belong. I'm glad to be a Rebel."
