Only one can start, but Webb, Mahomes give Tech a dangerous tandem
At some point in August, Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury will name either Davis Webb or Patrick Mahomes as the Red Raiders' starting quarterback.
Either way, Tech will enter the 2015 season with a quarterback that boasts starting experience in the Big 12. Not every team engaged in a quarterback competition, and there's a bunch in the Big 12, can say that.
So it's at least a decent confidence-builder for an offense that, some might not easily remember, led the Big 12 in passing (351.1 yards per game), had a 1,000-yard rusher in returning tailback DeAndre Washington and finished third in total offense behind Baylor and TCU, despite not necessarily boasting a go-to receiver.
It's why the Dallas Morning News has ranked Tech's tandem as the fourth-best quarterback unit among the programs in Texas.
Webb, a junior-to-be and last season's starter until an injury limited him to eight games, led the Big 12 in passing (317.4 yards per game). However, he was also an erratic thrower and his 13 interceptions were the most in the conference. He was limited in the spring and didn't play in the spring game because he was still recovering from shoulder surgery.
Mahomes, more of a dual-threat quarterback compared to the more prototypical Webb, put this competition in motion with a strong end to the 2014 season, in particular, nearly upsetting Baylor at AT&T Stadium. Mahomes led a mammoth comeback and threw for 598 yards on 30-of-56 passing with six touchdowns.
Kingsbury has said his plan is to name a starter sooner rather than later in fall camp to give the offense the greatest chance of developing cohesiveness.
Whichever quarterback he chooses, Tech should again have an offense that can move the ball and score points.
