Patterson voted a 'couple' teams ahead of Frogs in coaches poll

How unimpressed was TCU coach Gary Patterson with his team's opening-game performance? Enough so that he voted a couple teams, he said, ahead of the Horned Frogs in this week's coaches top 25 poll.

TCU dropped from No. 2 to No. 3 in both the coaches poll, of which Patterson is a voter, and the AP top 25 poll. Alabama, which started the season at No. 3, jumped to No. 2 after an impressive win over then-No. 20 Wisconsin. Defending national champ Ohio State remained No. 1 in both polls.

"I saw some really good football teams Saturday," Patterson said during his Tuesday press conference. "And I’ll be honest with you, I voted a couple of them ahead of us.”

Patterson is dealing with a young defense that has been rocked by injury and a leave of absence since the 23-17 opening win at Minnesota. But his school record-setting offense returns nearly intact and figured to again be a high-scoring machine. Last week's game at Minnesota was the first time TCU didn't score at least 30 points with Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Trevone Boykin under center.

"You got to be all-in,” Patterson said. “I wish I could be more positive, but I think it’s better to be the way it is. If you’re not acting right on and off the field, then I got a problem. In general, when we’ve bought in, we’ve had good seasons. And no matter how talented we are, if we don’t all buy in at TCU, we don’t."

The Horned Frogs' next chance to show their level of buy-in comes Saturday in their home opener against Stephen F. Austin, a game TCU should handle with relative ease. They close out the non-conference schedule on Sept. 19 at home against SMU.
