Pitt OC Jim Chaney on the move to Georgia

Published Dec. 12, 2015 11:16 a.m. ET

Pitt offensive coordinator Jim Chaney has been hired by new Georgia coach Kirby Smart.

According to a Saturday announcement from the school, Chaney, who also served as the Panthers' quarterbacks coach, and Arkansas offensive line coach Sam Pittman “have been named to similar positions at UGA.”

Meanwhile, Glen Schumann, Alabama Director of Player Development and Associate Director of Personnel, has joined the defensive staff.

A source told FOX Sports Saturday morning that Chaney was set to become the new Georgia offensive coordinator.

The Chaney hire is a significant one by Smart. The 53-year-old Chaney has extensive experience developing QBs and has worked in the SEC, ACC, Big Ten and NFL. Chaney has coached at Tennessee and Arkansas.

In 2014, Chaney's Hogs outgained Smart and Alabama 335-227 in yards, and the Razorbacks went 9 of 19 on third downs in a 14-13 Tide win.

This fall, Chaney helped Pitt to an 8-4 debut season under new coach Pat Narduzzi and despite losing star RB James Conner for the season, the Panthers ranked a respectable No. 63 in the nation in yards per play at 5.64.

Bringing in veteran O-line coach Pittman seems like a terrific addition for Georgia. Pittman’s last four lines — three at Arkansas and one at Tennessee in 2012 — each led the SEC in fewest sacks allowed.
