Playing multiple sports key in turning Washington into a star

Published Nov. 10, 2015 11:24 p.m. ET

James Washington has blossomed into a star before our very eyes in the past few weeks of the season. The speedy wide out went off for 200 yards in Week 9, and against TCU, he hauled in three long TD passes.

High school athletes are specializing in one sport more and more these days... but not Washington. In fact, he's proof that often times, playing several sports can enhance competitive spirit and awareness on the field. Washington played football, basketball track and tennis as a prep.

“We kind of had to steer him,” Washington's mom, Chryst,a said of her and James Sr. “That tennis, that was a girls' thing for him. But he realized that, ‘Hey, it pays off, too.'

“One thing will help the next thing.”

Tre Flowers has some advice for his future kids after watching Washington this season.

“I'm going to put my kids into just as many sports as he played, so hopefully they come out as good,” said the Cowboys safety.
