Poll: Should K-State start Hubener or Cook in Liberty Bowl?

Published Dec. 16, 2015 9:47 p.m. ET

Kansas State coach Bill Snyder doesn't know who he'll start at quarterback against Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl. His decision is between Joe Hubener and receiver-turned-QB Kody Cook.

Hubener took over in the season-opener after starter Jesse Ertz went down with a season-ending knee injury. Cook has been used sporadically as an emergency QB when Hubener has been banged up, and he's surprisingly had a run of success, as he did when inserted in the third quarter of the regular-season finale win against West Virginia.

If he had to pick today, Snyder said he wouldn't be certain which way to turn.

"I would probably go back upstairs,” Snyder told Kellis Robinett of the Kansas City Star, “and sit in my office and ponder that for a while."

Snyder told Robinette that he has contemplated starting Cook at quarterback before, but was reluctant to because of Cook's value at wide receiver. He caught 27 passes for 412 yards and three touchdowns this season. All those marks rank second on the team.

Hubener has played in all 12 games and started 11, but he's completed only 48.7 percent of his passes. Hubener has been a better rusher, gaining 613 yards with 13 touchdowns.

He's coming off his worst outing of the season against West Virginia, going 6-of-19 for 85 yards and two interceptions, which sent him to the bench in favor of Cook, who rallied the team.

Now, as K-State looks to end the year with a fourth consecutive victory, Snyder must decided if he sticks with Hubener one more time, or gives Cook a chance to make it a Cinderella finish.
