Poll: Should the Longhorns have interest in Kyler Murray?

Published Dec. 21, 2015 12:42 p.m. ET

It would certainly be more interesting if Kyler Murray didn't have to sit out the 2016 season after he transfers from Texas A&M.

But those are the NCAA rules, and Murray, the disgruntled former five-star recruit, has decided to transfer from Texas A&M. He can choose any school that is not in the SEC or on A&M's schedule over the next four years. That puts Texas in-play for Murray's services if indeed he and the Longhorns had a mutual interest, although it appears that the Longhorns do not.

Remember prior to signing day, Murray had a brief dalliance with Texas before deciding on the A&M, where his dad, Kevin Murray starred at quarterback from the Aggies in the 1980s. The Longhorns were in search of a quarterback after top commit Zach Gentry changed his mind late in the game and decided to join Jim Harbaugh at Michigan.

Texas is bringing in highly touted QB commit Shane Buechele in 2016, and Sam Ehlinger is a 2017 commit. Ehlinger led Westlake (Texas) High School to the Class 6A title game last week and was named the Associated Press top offensive player in Class 6A as well as the Texas Associated Press Sports Editors Player of the Year.

If Murray was eligible to play right away, he would probably look a lot more enticing to Texas' coaches. But with two big commits coming in, suddenly a transferring Murray doesn't necessarily fit the bill.
