Predicting SEC Football - Week... Six?

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

As SEC.com would list it, Week Four is in the books. Or as my editor seems to insist Week Five. I’ll save taking the fight to the bureaucrats for another day. This week my focus is on redemption. No, not for The HOGS loss to A&M, but for my dismal 6-3 performance last week, dropping me to a less than satisfactory 35-9 (79.5%) on the season. Less focus on words, more on numbers. Here we go…

Alcorn State @ (20) Arkansas – Arkansas looks to rebound from a heartbreaking second half against Texas A&M to prove they are deserved of their ranking. They’ll have to wait a week to host Alabama to really prove it, which could lead to an 0 – 2 start in the SEC. First up, though, this week is Alcorn State, who honestly, if I didn’t have “Google”, I would not have any idea who the Braves played this last week. HOGS in War Memorial by 34.

(23) Florida @ Vanderbilt – Vanderbilt has been a predictor’s curse all season so far. Well, at least a handsome SEC guru that I know has struggled with them. Alas, they’re playing a strong Gators group that will be known as the team that lost the streak. Losing to their old rival Tennessee will have the better team in Nashville playing even that much harder. Florida by 21.

UL-Monroe @ Auburn – Some might see this game as a possible upset in the making. Also, some might also see Miley Cyrus as the most attractive creature to ever grace Rolling Stones Magazine. The Tigers have a little bit of momentum rolling like a ticking clock. Monroe is no match. Plainsmen by 27.

(11) Tennessee @ (25) Georgia – Two Top 25 Teams. Ten Touchdowns Total. Now that our Dwight K Schrute impression is over, let’s talk business. Georgia may be clinging to a ranking, however, they are beyond struggling. Furthermore, the Bulldogs are hoping that having CBS in town will help motivate players and fans alike. Unfortunately, even playing the Vols at home will not make enough of a difference to make this interesting. Tennessee by 22.

(9) Texas A&M @ South Carolina – A&M leaves their home state and heads toward the East Coast. Myrtle Beach may not be on the agenda, however, a thrashing of the Gamecocks is at the very top. The Aggies do not fear a letdown this week and make easy work of South Carolina. Texas A&M by 24.

Kentucky @ (1) Alabama – Kentucky played solid against the Gamecocks last week and walked away with a quality victory. Meanwhile, Alabama dominated Kent State 48 – Love. And an ‘lucky’ and maybe it will slow the Crimson Tide offense down. Anyone that thinks this game will be close, please raise your right hand… That ‘s what we thought. Tide by 31.

Memphis @ (16) Ole Miss – Memphis could pose an interesting conflict for the Rebels, however, they are not even close in caliber. Ole Miss still hungers to prove that they belong in the spotlight with a small number to the left of their name. They tune up for their bye next week. Rebs by 30.

Missouri @ LSU: Game of the Week – A Tale of Two Tigers only garners GOTW honors because nothing (including Tennessee at Georgia) looks to have any promise as match-ups go. Hence, while these two may not be the best teams, they will play each other down to the wire. Also, two important advantages: Missouri is playing in Death Valley at night, and LSU is having to go “fewer miles”. Tip your waitress folks. LSU pulls it off by 3.

Some may have noticed that we have no games on Upset Alert this week. None of Week Five’s [cough, cough] contests really fit the bill although Vandy over Florida was considered. Therefore, feel free to tell us whom you think should be the most primed contest capable of being an upset.
