Report: Art Briles has reached a contract settlement with Baylor
Former Baylor football coach Art Briles and the university have agreed on a contract settlement in the wake of his dismissal, according to multiple reports.
Bleacher Report first broke the news.
No details on the amount of the settlement are available, but Briles was owed just under $40 million on a contract that ran through 2023.
On Thursday, The Associated Press reported that Briles was accusing Baylor of wrongful termination as part of a motion filed in response to a lawsuit levied against the university and Briles by a woman who was raped by a football player.
He said he had no interest in settling the suit and that he would use attorneys separate from the school’s.
"The conclusion is inescapable that the motive of Baylor and the Board of Regents was to use its head football coach and the Baylor athletic department as a camouflage to disguise and distract from its own institutional failure to comply" with federal civil rights protections, Briles’ lawyer, Ernest Cannon, wrote to Baylor's attorneys.
KWTX.com reported Friday that Briles’ motion had been withdrawn.
Briles, 60, was suspended with intent to dismiss May 26 as part of the university’s response to an independent law firm investigation that detailed deficiencies in the way the school and the football program reacted to sexual assault allegations against its players dating back to 2009.
Baylor hired Briles in 2008, and he led an on-field resurgence that resulted in 50 wins in the past five seasons.
