Report: Boston College DC Brown headed to Michigan

Published Dec. 21, 2015 10:24 a.m. ET

The man who molded Boston College’s defense into one of the top units in the country is leaving, as the Boston Herald confirmed that Eagles’ defensive coordinator Don Brown will take the same position on Jim Harbaugh’s staff in Michigan.

Per the Boston Herald:

Brown will replace D.J. Durkin on Wolverine coach Jim Harbaugh’s staff. Durkin left to take over as coach at Maryland.

Michigan will likely make the announcement (Monday), according to the source, but neither school had issued a statement confirming Brown’s departure. Brown did not return a phone call last night.

Brown, 60, led an Eagles defense that ranked No. 1 in the nation in total defense (254.3 yards allowed), second in rushing defense (82.2) and eighth in pass defense (171.2). BC finished fourth in points allowed (15.3). He was named the 2015 Assistant Coach of the Year by the FBS American Football Coaches Association earlier this month.

After coordinator jobs at Maryland and UConn, Brown joined the Eagles staff in 2013. He was also a head coach at Northeastern (2000-03) and UMass (2004-08).

Money — he will see a substantial raise, rumored to be $800,000 in the first year — and the high profile were apparently enough to sway Brown, whose children and grandchildren reside in the Boston area. He also enjoyed a great deal of autonomy under BC coach Steve Addazio.
