Report: Muschamp in talks with possible South Carolina staff

Published Dec. 4, 2015 1:11 p.m. ET

Is Will Muschamp already filling out his prospective South Carolina coaching staff?

According to The State, which cited sources, Muschamp has offered former Gamecocks running back Marcus Lattimore a spot on his staff if Muschamp is named head coach.

Muschamp, currently the defensive coordinator with Auburn after four years as coach at Florida from 2011-14, is believed to be the front-runner for the job, although FOX Sports insider Bruce Feldman reported Thursday that the Gamecocks also are expected to interview Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez before making their decision.

The State also reported that Lattimore has been told by Muschamp that Muschamp has been in talks with school president Harris Pastides and that "they’re going to try to get this thing done as soon as possible."

Feldman and others have indicated that South Carolina would like to have a coach in place by Sunday.

Lattimore, who suffered a horrific knee injury during his senior season at South Carolina in 2012, played one year for the 49ers before retiring from the NFL. The 23-year-old has said in the past that he does not plan to go into college coaching immediately, but per The State, Lattimore considers Muschamp's offer "intriguing."

Of course, whether Muschamp gets the job remains to be seen, but the fiery 44-year-old seems to be at least planning for the possibility that he will.
