Report: Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo to interview at BYU

Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo will interview Monday for the open coaching job at BYU, his agent reportedly said Thursday.

The Capital Gazette reported that, according to agent Evan Beard, Niumatalolo will travel to Utah on Monday, tour the facilities in Provo and interview with BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe. Beard clarified that the Cougars have not made his client a contract offer.

"Kenny is doing his due diligence," Beard said. "He feels strongly that he needs to hear what BYU has to say."

Niumatalolo has been head coach at Navy since December 2007, when Paul Johnson left to take the coaching job at Georgia Tech and Niumatalolo was promoted from his position as offensive coordinator. BYU is searching for a replacement for former coach Bronco Mendenhall, who left last week to become coach at Virginia.

The 50-year-old Niumatalolo has been rumored as a candidate at BYU since Mendenhall's departure, as the Hawaii native is a practicing Latter-Day Saint who went on a mission prior to starting his coaching career. Holmoe has previously said that being a member of the Church of Latter-Day Saints is a requirement for the next coach.

The Midshipmen finish their regular season Saturday against rival Army.
