Report: QB Russell will return for spring practice

Published Dec. 21, 2015 1:31 p.m. ET

Baylor Bears quarterback Seth Russell had his promising junior season cut short when he broke a bone in his neck in late October and underwent season-ending surgery.

His 2016 season, however, should get started right on time.

Prior to his injury, Russell had thrown 29 touchdowns passes to only six interceptions for 2,104 yards while leading the nation's No. 1 offense in total yards and scoring.

Russell's return will make for an interesting competition between Russell and Jarrett Stidham, a true freshman who replaced Russell, but then also suffered a season-ending injury. Baylor coach Art Briles is extremely high on Stidham's potential, and starting a sophomore over a senior in 2016 will one scenario Briles will look at.

Third-string quarterback Chris Johnson will start the Russell Athletic Bowl against North Carolina on Dec. 29.
