Rudolph was the easy choice to be named starter

Published Jul. 23, 2015 9:05 p.m. ET

Unlike at Oklahoma where coach Bob Stoops has shied away from naming a starting quarterback heading into the 2015 season, all it took was three games and an offseason for Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy to pick his.

Mason Rudolph, who was redshirted all of last season until the final three games of the year, beat Oklahoma on the road and then led OSU to a Cactus Bowl win over Washington, will be the starter for the Cowboys. He will be a sophomore this season.

"We felt like it was best for our football team to name him the starter," Gundy told The Oklahoman earlier this week in Dallas at Big 12 Media Days. "Obviously we had success at the latter part of the season with him."

Rudolph went 2-1 with his only loss coming against Baylor.

The decision to name Rudolph the starter, which was done even before the spring game back in April isn't curious despite the fact senior J.W. Walsh is on the roster and has played in 20 games for the Cowboys.

The Cowboys have had two quarterbacks who have started in the past two seasons transfer. Wes Lunt is now at Illinois and Daxx Garman is at Maryland.

Stoops said he is still deciding between Trevor Knight and newcomer Baker Mayfield.
