Salem to call plays for Pitt during Military Bowl
Pitt will hire a new offensive coordinator after its Dec. 28 Military Bowl showdown with Navy, Panthers head coach Pat Narduzzi said on Monday.
The Panthers (8-4) were left scrambling to find a new offensive coordinator after Jim Chaney left to take the same position at Georgia last week.
For now, Pitt tight ends coach, Tim Salem, will call the plays for during the Military Bowl and is in the running to be the team’s new offensive coordinator.

Whoever the next offensive coordinator will be, Narduzzi said he would like him to be committed to Pitt football.

Salem will be a candidate for the full-time offensive coordinator job as well, Narduzzi said. Salem previously served as an offensive coordinator at Purdue (1994-96), Eastern Michigan (2003) and Central Florida (2004-08).
“We’ll see how the game goes,” Narduzzi said. “Tim, like I said, has called it before, he knows our offense. The kids have responded to him in the last couple of days, too.”(Narduzzi) did say he’d prefer a candidate with playcalling experience, as well as someone who would like to stay at Pitt for longer than one season. Former offensive coordinator Jim Chaney bolted for Georgia last week after just one year with the Panthers.
“We don’t need a great coach to come in here and be here for a year,” Narduzzi said. “That does me no good, that does our football team no good.”
