Scarlet Knights hope bigger is better in 2015
To get ready for their second season as members of the Big Ten, Rutgers players are trying to bulk up during the offseason.
NJ.com reports 19 program records have already fallen in the weight room this winter and spring as the Scarlet Knights work to get bigger to hold up better against the rough-and-tumble Big Ten.
"The biggest thing that you can take from playing in the Big Ten is that it's a very physical league," offensive lineman Keith Lumpkin told the site. "It's very physical so you have to adapt to the physicality of that league."
Head coach Kyle Flood was sure to note simply getting heavier won't make the Scarlet Knights, who were outscored by a combined 180-44 by Ohio State, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Michigan State last season, more competitive in their new league.
"I don't focus on the weight, I focus on explosion," Flood said. "That's really what I'm looking for and if we get bigger in the process, that's fine. We're looking for explosive athletes, and I can only point to the results. When you break 19 all-time records, that tells me that we're moving in the right direction as a program."
