Snoop Dogg's son quits UCLA football team for a second time

The on-again, off-again saga between UCLA football and former star recruit Cordell Broadus, the son of Snoop Dogg appears to be off again. On Monday, the Bruins opened fall camp, and as many beat writers in attendance noticed, Broadus was not on the active roster.

Monday’s news is just the latest twist for the one-time four-star recruit, who was one of the most coveted wide receiver prospects in the class of 2015.

It all started back on Signing Day 2015, when Broadus made the somewhat surprising decision to commit to UCLA. His father, Snoop Dogg is of course a die-hard USC fan, leading many to believe he would end up a Trojan.

When he chose UCLA it shocked the nation, and led to a fantastic comment from his father on Signing Day.

“I’m throwing all my USC drawers away,” Snoop Dogg said that day. “I’m going UCLA 100,000 percent.”

The comment drew some laughs, but the love-affair between UCLA and the Broadus family didn’t last long. Shortly after arriving on campus, Cordell Broadus decided to quit football to pursue other passions.

Afterward, he explained the decision with a post on Instagram, that was both touching, and a little bit saddening. It read:

“I played football for my father because I thought that was the only way he would love me & be apart of my life. It took me 12 years to realize he loves Cordell Broadus the person not Cordell Broadus the football player. The best day of my life was when I heard those exact words; I love you dad hope you have a great birthday.”

Yet even after that note, Broadus --- who stayed at UCLA as a student --- reversed course and decided to return to football last spring. After a meeting with UCLA football coach Jim Mora, he was allowed back on the team as a walk-on, working out with the team at 5:30 a.m.

Following the decision to return he told reporters:

“I was in a state where I wasn’t mentally there,” said Broadus. “Trying to keep up with a football schedule, you have to be very mentally strong and be able to keep up with all the obstacles that are thrown at you. And I feel like I wasn’t going to give it my all with going through what I was going through.”

Unfortunately now, it appears as though Broadus is again done with football, at least at UCLA.

You’d have to imagine that, after burning Jim Mora twice, if Broadus does want to play, it would have to be somewhere other than with the Bruins.
