East Carolina starting quarterback Kurt Benkert is out for the season with a torn ACL, a source told FOX Sports Wednesday morning.

There were very high hopes inside the Pirates football program surrounding the talented 6-3, 220-pound sophomore from Florida who runs a 4.7 40 and has a very good arm. Benkert played in three games in 2014 and used his redshirt season in 2013. He was taking over for record-setting QB Shane Carden.

The Pirates open the season Sept. 5 against Towson before going to Florida in Week Two. The new starting QB will either be JC transfer Blake Kemp or junior Cody Keith.
