Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey named AP Player of the Year

Published Dec. 22, 2015 2:16 p.m. ET

Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey has been named The Associated Press college football player of the year. He is the first non-Heisman Trophy winner to earn the honor in six years.

McCaffrey was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy to Alabama RB Derrick Henry, but received 29 of 60 votes to win the AP award.

The sophomore sensation led Stanford to an 11-2 record and its third Rose Bowl in four years. He broke Barry Sanders' single-season record for all-purpose yards and has gained 3,496 all-purpose yards this season.
